Betsy as Annie!

Blizzard 2011 drifts are taller than my 4-foot son

Jamie Miller, 7, peers out his back door at the blowing and drifting snow in his backyard in Bay City, Mich. February 2, 2011. The blizzard conditions shut down most non-essential schools, government and businesses in Bay City. Most of Michigan, including Bay County, has been hit hard by the blizzard that is sweeping across the Midwest. Officials report that the area has not seen this strong of a blizzard in 15 years. Snow thunder was heard early this morning.

National Geographic Photo of the Day Today!

My good friend, Dick Van Nostrand, found this today. August 17. National Geographic Photo of the Day.

This trip almost didn’t happen!

For real. A flash of brown fur. Boom!!! Crumple. Crumple Crumple. We hit a deer head on. The mini van lurched but continued on trampling the large doe under our wheels. Lucky for us the deer went under the car and not through the windshield. We were almost killed while Jessie was driving me to the airport early this morning. We were astounded.

“Oh Kent! Oh Kent,” Jessie screamed. “We have to pull over!” The sign read, Mackinaw Rd. four miles from our exit to the airport. I said, “No! No! We have to make it to Garfield Road! Steam began streaming from what was left of the hood of the car. There was no way I was going to be stuck on the side of the interstate. Jessie protested as an exit went by. As Jessie continued to freak out, I calmed her down by showing her that the temperature gauge had not moved. Finally our exit was in sight. A gas station came into view. The temperature gauge climbed. She turned off US 10. The steam ever increasing spewed everywhere. The temperature gauge peaked just as we pulled into the gas station.

Still 5 miles from the airport. What to do. Jessie, the queen of everything, asked a man pumping gas if he could give me a ride. I surveyed the damage. Bad. Real bad.

Within 10 minutes I was on my way. Thank you to the man that drove me! Thank you Jessie! What a relief!

So here I am. Safe and sound. Now at Talkeetna, Alaska.
